Conditions We Treat

Midfoot arthritis

What is midfoot arthritis?

Middfoot arthritis refers to arthritis that develops in the joints of the middle of the foot that support the weight bearing arch of the foot.

What are the symptoms of midfoot arthritis?

If you notice these symptoms, consulting a specialist can help address the condition and prevent it from worsening.

  • Pain and swelling

    • Discomfort around the top of the foot, especially when walking/running or wearing tight shoes. Pain is worse at the end of the day and at night.
  • Bony bump on top of the foot

    • A visible prominence forms on top of the foot due to excessive bone called osteophytes, that grow around the joints that have developed arthritis.
  • Numbness in the foot

    • The bony prominence that forms on top of the foot (osteophyte) can displace or compress the nerve that runs on top of the foot. This can result in reduced feeling on the top of the foot that sometimes involves the toes.
  • Flat feet or fallen arches

    • Patients with flat feet can develop arthritis involving the joints of the middle of the foot. Arthritis of the middle of the foot may also cause the arch of the foot to collapse when severe arthritis causes dislocation of joints and destruction of surrounding bone.

What does midfoot arthritis surgery involve?

A CT scan will determine the severity of the arthritis and the number of joints involved. The arthritic joints are permanently fused with plates and screws through an incision on top of the foot. These plates can remain in the foot and are only removed if you are troubled by prominent screws.

What are the risks associated with midfoot fusion surgery?
